Smoking chimney means life

This website is dedicated to those who seek a way back from big city to small villages or towns. You can’t imagine city escape without having a plan to secure basic comfort inherent to the city life. The only question is about the costs to duplicate this comfort into a country house.

My parents considered building a country house as major step to a quiet life after retirement. It turned out impossible for them due to lack of driving skills, poor medical assistance and most important uncertainty about their own abilities at that age.

In our family I take care of the living standards. That is why I’d like to share some achievements related to heating and other facilities.

No doubt Chimneyting© appears to be the pinnacle of my efforts to bring warmth in our home. At the time of writting this article the stove still holds about 50-60оС being refueled and lit 13 hours ago! In the meantime it provided 140 litres 65оС hot water and secured strong burning process for 9 hours. Example how this is done with 8-9 kg fuel (wood chunks fitting in 15 litres bucket) have been posted here. The house insulation gived me the priviledge to refuel the stove once a day if outside temperatures are near zero and above. This way my role of a stoker appears to be somekind acceptable and so the loss of town’s central heating.

Why not a boiler? Building a local heating installation seems to be ideal replacement of the city model but there are some drawbacks that brought me to start developing Chimneyting© At first place the big initial investment. And it is not big only in terms of money but as setting up a place for the boiler and the whole organization related to it. There has to be enough space for the boiler and the tank (if pellets are the fuel) which must be easily accessible and located in a way that reduced carrying the fuel. Basements normally don’t cover all criteria. Pipe work to all rooms is a serious task as well. Secondly – this system normally is designed to provide heating capacity for entire house. If you decide to stop heating for half of the premises this is problem for the boiler since these devices do not work well operating with less than half of its capacity. Therefore you have to provide more space for buffer – 1-2 tons vessel that will store the excessive heat from the boiler and will keep the warmth after boiler stopped. So I considered better option to have several smaller stoves instead. The problem is that smaller devices are less effective. At least most of them. That is how I ended up in the realm of the rocket stoves.

Chimneyting© is part of this stove family now. It has been designed with the option to be upgraded with heat exchanger for production of hot water and downgraded back to a normal „dry“ stove with ease.

All pages on the site reflect latest level of understanding I’ve got. That is why you may find some discrepancies between earlier posts and the respective page content. For example now I’ve found a way to load up to 10kg fuel in the tank (compared to 6kg previous season) which resulted in 9 hours intensive heating and 3h burn low. Here you’ll find information about wood heating, the use of solar energy, qualities and weak spots of different devices on the market, the skills needed for country life. As a city dweller writer I hope to have shared this information in a way that helps all enthusiasts in their way back to the country. Enjoy reading and watching!
